The Spirit of Jazz & Democracy is a program of lectures, concerts, workshops, and master classes developed by Fragman that illuminate and demonstrate the parallels of Jazz and Democracy. Jazz is the true American art form and the music of freedom in performance as well as concept.
Fragman's presentations highlight the origin and history of Jazz, innovation and improvisation in Jazz as modes of freedom, and the use of Jazz by the US government in foreign policy to promote American values, ideas of Democracy, and freedom around the world.
Concerts feature master musicians and improvisors Paul F. Murphy and Larry Willis, with guest performances by poet Jere Carroll and Fragman. The concerts are 100% improvised as improvisation is one of the essential elements of the music. The video below further details the program.
In September 2016, The Spirit of Jazz & Democracy debuted at the historic public honors college, St. Mary's College of Maryland, to great reception. The program was hosted by the Center for the Study of Democracy.
The Spirit of Jazz & Democracy returns to St. Mary’s College in 2017. A July 21 concert, sponsored by the DeSousa-Brent Scholars Program, opens the Tributary Recital Series of the popular SMCM River Concert Series. On September 23, Fragman and Murphy will launch a fall series of Spirit of Jazz & Democracy discussions, workshops, master classes, and concerts. See the program schedule below.
